Beware the dark side, Master Google

“On January 12, 2007 Google has stopped indexing Uruknet.info as a news source.”//sourcewatch

“Google stopped indexing Uruknet the middle of May. After Uruknet wrote (again!) many e-mails to Google (and again! we didn’t receive any reply) Google restarted indexing some (not all!) Uruknet’s article on June 17. However, it seems that these articles have a short life on Google since they keep disappearing immediately after they are indexed.”//Uruknet

“Action Alert! Uruknet, one of the most important sources of un-censored news about the occupied Palestinian territories and the Iraq war was removed from Google News on April 24, 2008, and was recently hacked.”//people´svoice

“Google News has again cut off URUKNET, one of the most reliable and important sources of news on the war in Iraq. Google has systematically and persistently sabotaged revolutionary websites like URUKNET, nor is URUKNET the only victim of their censorship. Axis of Logic has also been cut off from Google News distribution.”//axisoflogic

………

oder vielleicht eher was technisches:

“After taking its childcare programs in-house, at the behest of Google executive Susan Wojcicki, the sister-in-law of founder Sergey Brin, Google hiked its rates 70 percent.”//amateureconomist

“At a T.G.I.F. in June, the Google co-founder Sergey Brin said he had no sympathy for the parents, and that he was tired of “Googlers” who felt entitled to perks like “bottled water and M&Ms,” according to several people in the meeting. (A Google spokesman denies that Mr. Brin made that comment.)”//valleywag

“YouTube and Google should not be made to place this vital asset in hazard merely to allay speculation,” the judge said. “A plausible showing that YouTube and Google’s denials are false, and that the search function can and has been used to discriminate in favor of infringing content, should be required before disclosure of so valuable and vulnerable an asset is compelled.”

The judge also denied Viacom‘s motion for Google to produce source code for its Video Identification Tool, which helps copyright notify Google of copyright infringement.

However, the judge granted a Viacom motion that records of every video watched by YouTube users, including their login names and IP addresses, be turned over to the entertainment giant.”//cnet

“The company argued it needed access to the information on user viewing habits to prove that copyright-infringing material is more popular than user-generated videos on YouTube, which would strengthen its case against Google.”//acreativerevolution

“It’s worth pointing out, then, that if you’re a YouTube user you will soon have your personal information handed over by YouTube’s owner, Google, to the American broadcasting company Viacom…The internet industry might deny the usefulness of IP addresses, but the unspoken reality it’s the crucial piece of the jigsaw for identifying you. Even if it doesn’t single you out specifically, it’s probably close enough. And when given extra context – such as the things you’ve searched for – it’s almost certainly enough to pull you out of the crowd.”//guardian

“Applying this view to the Viacom v. YouTube case suggests that privacy protection has to focus more limiting how people and institutions can *use* personal information even as we recognize that it is harder and harder to protect privacy by access control alone.”//Weitzner

“It’s hard to overstate how much is at stake in this battle. Passing retroactive immunity would put an end once and for all to lawsuits which have the potential to expose the full extent of Bush’s illegal wiretapping program. This is literally one of the last avenues we have to hold the Bush administration accountable before they leave office. On this question, there can be no doubt, immunity for phone companies is the same as immunity for George Bush and Dick Cheney.”//thepeople´svoice

“The Global Voices Citizen Media Summit in Budapest, Hungary was a chance for 200 of these prominent bloggers, citizen journalists and NGO activists to share their experiences promoting transparency and political reform, and to discuss crucial topics like internet filtering, censorship, the role of social media and the multilingual web…These bloggers are critical to the promotion of free expression and transparency on the internet. They engage in political debate and expose issues often ignored by more traditional information sources in their countries. Sometimes this entails great risks.”//googlepolicyonline
